High Court denies Akeem Ferguson bail for second time in attempted murder case

By Breaking Belize News Staff: High Court Justice Candace Nanton has denied bail to 30-year-old Akeem Fernando Ferguson for a second time in connection with the attempted murder of Ladyville resident Lionel Nigel Logan.

Ferguson is jointly charged with 21-year-old Brandon Christian Villamil over the April 11, 2026 shooting and stabbing of Logan on Henry Street in Ladyville. Villamil has since been granted bail by the High Court.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Ferguson’s attorney, David McKoy, argued that his client’s criminal record should not automatically prevent him from receiving bail and submitted that the court could impose strict conditions.

Justice Nanton, however, noted Ferguson’s previous convictions, including aggravated assault and a drug offence, and found that no special circumstances had been presented to justify granting bail before the usual statutory period had elapsed.

The judge reportedly stated that Ferguson’s previous conviction for an offence of a similar nature provided grounds for denying bail.

Ferguson was previously denied bail by Justice Nigel Pilgrim in June.

Police allege that Logan was walking on Henry Street on April 11 when he was approached by two men and became involved in an altercation. Logan was allegedly stabbed in the lower back and shot before the attackers fled.

Police said Logan identified Ferguson at the scene and later positively identified him as the person who shot him. Ferguson was detained later that night.

Ferguson and Villamil are scheduled to return to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on August 24, 2026. Ferguson would have to make any further bail application before the High Court.
