Man charged with wounding after knife incident at Nuevo San Juan football field

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 24-year-old laborer of Nuevo San Juan Village, Orange Walk District, has been arrested and charged with wounding following a weekend altercation at the village football field.

According to the report made to police, a 40-year-old Belizean laborer, also of Nuevo San Juan, was at the field around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, painting it for a game along with other villagers when a man approached within about three feet of him. The man allegedly told him that he would not forget a previous misunderstanding involving the older man’s son, then pulled out a silver knife and advanced toward him.

The man reported that he moved backward and a struggle ensued, during which he managed to grab his attacker and take away the knife. He sustained a cut to his back, a cut to his left hand and a bite to his left underarm. He sought medical attention, and a doctor certified his injuries as wounding.

Initial checks in the village did not locate the suspect. On Monday, July 20, police swore to an information and complaint, obtained a warrant in the first instance, and formally arrested and charged Jorje David Mendez, 24, of Nuevo San Juan Village, with the crime of wounding. He was cautioned and remained silent. The complainant has requested court action.
