Ammunition cache and cannabis found hidden in abandoned house

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Acting on a tip, police in Orange Walk have uncovered a hidden stash of live ammunition and suspected cannabis inside an abandoned house on the Palmar Road, with no one around to answer for it.

According to the Belize Police Department, on Saturday, July 18, 2026, officers of the Orange Walk Quick Response Team, acting upon information received, conducted a search at an abandoned house in the area.

The hiding spot was a simple one. Searching under a yellow sponge, an officer found a transparent plastic containing 27 rounds of 9mm ammunition of assorted brands, along with a black magazine, and a separate plastic containing a green leafy substance suspected to be cannabis.

With no one in the immediate area, the items were retrieved and taken to the Orange Walk Police Station as found property.

At the station, the suspected cannabis was weighed at 93.13 grams. The drugs, the 27 rounds of ammunition, and the magazine were sealed in labelled envelopes and handed over through the chain of custody as found property.

No one has been arrested in connection with the find, and the matter remains under police attention.

The discovery of live 9mm rounds comes at a time of heightened concern over gun violence in the district, where expended 9mm shells featured in the recent drive-by shooting on San Antonio Road. Police have drawn no link between the found ammunition and any incident, but the cache is a reminder of the firearms and rounds circulating beyond legal hands.
