DAR ES SALAAM: REAL estate industry stakeholders have urged house and land brokers across the country to strictly uphold work ethics, pursue professional development, and join formal registration systems to shed public stigma and restore dignity to the profession.

The call was spearheaded by Mkuyu Africa Company Director, Juneid Othman, during a recent stakeholder meeting in Dar es Salaam convened to address sector challenges and discuss regulatory formalization.

Mr Othman emphasized that the housing, land, and construction sectors directly impact everyday lives, making honesty, professionalism, and accountability essential to safeguarding client interests and building public trust.

Mr Othman warned that the lack of formal identification and accountability for rogue operators severely damages the reputation of legitimate professionals across the industry.

“When a problem is caused by one person, sometimes society sees all brokers as con artists. This situation denies respect to those who work with honesty and professionalism,” Othman stated, urging honest practitioners to lead the shift toward ethical standards.

To permanently address these reputation issues and combat fraud, industry leaders stressed the urgent need to establish a central Board of Brokers to oversee ethical guidelines, enforce professional standards, and officially register legal operators locally and internationally.

Drawing a direct comparison to established fields, He noted that just as doctors, lawyers, and contractors are tracked and verified through professional regulatory bodies, property brokers require an equivalent system to ensure acceptable operational standards and protect clients from real estate disputes.

Supporting the drive for ethics and regulation, Mr Emmanuel Machibya, Chairman of the national brokers association (TBAB), noted that the proposal to create an oversight board has gained strong backing from stakeholders following awareness raised through Mkuyu Africa’s Miliki Mali platform. Machibya highlighted that formal regulation will unify brokers, ensure legal recognition, and establish transparent frameworks that safeguard buyer and seller rights alike.

Adding to the call for sector-wide reform, TBAB Vice Chairperson Leonida Sudi Ibrahim appealed to the government to implement legal mechanisms that formalize brokerage activities.

She announced that the association plans to roll out nationwide training programs—with a key focus on empowering women brokers—to build capacity, instill professional principles, and institute a standardized identification system.

Ibrahim underscored that formalizing the profession through ethical compliance and legal recognition will ultimately enable brokers to access financial services, secure business development loans, and achieve long-term economic empowerment.
