Nanette Hits New Streaming Milestone As “Painfully Happy” Continues To Resonate. South African R&B singer and songwriter Nanette has given fans another reason to celebrate as her growing impact on the streaming scene reaches a significant new chapter.

The singer took to X on Monday to reveal that her music has now surpassed 4 million all-time plays on Apple Music. Sharing a screenshot of the official Apple Music graphic featuring her portrait, Nanette reacted with a mixture of disbelief, excitement and gratitude. “Who’s responsible for thisssss?!!?!? this is just Apple Music, mind you,” she wrote.

The achievement arrives as Nanette continues to build on the momentum of Painfully Happy, her deeply personal project released in August 2025. The album explores the complicated relationship between happiness, grief and personal growth, drawing heavily from a period of profound loss in the singer’s life.

Nanette has previously revealed that the project was inspired by the passing of her aunt, a loss that coincided with one of the biggest moments of her early career. On the same day, she found herself featured on Apple Music’s Alpha playlist alongside fellow South African stars Elaine and Nomfundo Moh.

That emotional contradiction became a defining element of Painfully Happy. The project moves through vintage R&B, jazz, dance, reggae and Afropop influences, allowing Nanette to explore different shades of emotion while maintaining the intimate songwriting that has become central to her artistry.

Tracks such as “Suddenly,” “One Night,” “Abazali” and “Make it Dance” have stood out among the project’s most memorable moments, earning attention for their melodic appeal and emotional honesty. A deluxe edition followed in July 2026, expanding the project with additional material that reflected Nanette’s evolving journey towards healing and gratitude.

Born Nanette Sphesihle Nobethu Mbili in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, the Johannesburg-based artist has steadily built her reputation as one of the compelling voices within South African R&B. Her breakthrough came with her SAMA-nominated debut Bad Weather, followed by the independent EP The Waiting Room, which went on to surpass one million streams.

Since then, Nanette has continued to establish herself through a sound that refuses to remain within a single genre. Her music has secured placements on major Apple Music and Spotify playlists, while her vulnerable approach to songwriting has helped her cultivate a dedicated audience.
