Kenya High Court Rules Against Government’s 15% Safaricom Stake Divestiture

Kenya’s High Court has ruled against the government’s divestiture of a 15% stake in Safaricom PLC,  according to a public announcement issued by Safaricom on September 15, 2026.

Safaricom said the ruling relates to the government’s divestiture of 15% of its shareholding in the telecommunications company to Vodafone Kenya Limited, and effectively Vodacom Group Limited. The High Court issued its judgment on September 15, ruling against the divestiture.

The transaction had been completed on June 30, 2026, following the lifting of conservatory orders by the Court of Appeal and the fulfilment of the relevant conditions precedent.

Safaricom said it is reviewing the judgment and its implications, noting that the matter remains subject to legal processes. The company said it would provide further updates as appropriate.

The company also reiterated its commitment to serving customers in Kenya and Ethiopia, with a focus on connecting people and businesses, expanding opportunities and using technology to address societal challenges.

The announcement was issued by Linda Mesa Wambani, Company Secretary, Safaricom PLC, on behalf of the board.
