MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s federal government is closely monitoring flights from Ebola-affected African countries and has deployed health staff at Mogadishu airport, after neighbouring Kenya reported its first case of the virus on Tuesday, Caasimada Online reported on Wednesday.
Health Minister Ali Hajji Adan said the government had taken additional steps to keep the virus out of Somalia, including checking the health of travellers before they enter the country.
The Ministry of Health said it had made preparations to prevent a spillover and had launched an awareness campaign on how to prevent the virus spreading and on seeking medical attention immediately if symptoms appear.
Somalia faces particular risks. Three decades of conflict have left its health sector weak and largely outside government regulation, and the federal government does not control all of the country’s airports and borders. That could make it harder to track arriving travellers and, if the virus were found in the country, to contain its spread and treat those affected.
