By Zoila Palma: The Vatican has announced that priests and members of the breakaway Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) have been declared in schism and excommunicated after the group proceeded with the ordination of four new bishops without the approval of Pope Leo XIV.
The ordinations took place on Wednesday despite repeated warnings from the Pope to reverse the decision, CNN reports.
In a decree issued today, the Vatican’s doctrinal office said the four newly ordained bishops, along with the two bishops who participated in the ceremony, have been excommunicated, barring them from receiving the sacraments of the Church. The ruling also extends to SSPX priests and lay members who formally adhere to the group, warning that anyone who continues to support the society risks automatic excommunication.
The Vatican also outlined the steps required for priests seeking to return to full communion with the Catholic Church, including writing personally to Pope Leo XIV requesting that the excommunication be lifted, professing the Catholic faith, and pledging not to publicly oppose the Pope or his teachings. The latest decree further states that marriages and confessions performed by the SSPX will now be considered invalid.
The Society of Saint Pius X was founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and has long rejected key reforms introduced by the Second Vatican Council.
