By Zoila Palma: Tropical Storm Dolly has formed over the central tropical Atlantic, with the U.S. National Hurricane Center urging residents and interests in the Leeward Islands to closely monitor the system.
As of this morning, Dolly was located approximately 1,555 miles (2,505 km) east of the Leeward Islands.
Dolly is moving westward at about 24 mph (39 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue over the next several days. Forecast models indicate that the storm could approach the Leeward Islands this weekend.
The system currently has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h), with tropical-storm-force winds extending up to 60 miles (95 km) from its center.
The National Hurricane Center expects little change in Dolly’s strength over the next 48 hours and forecasts that the system will weaken into a tropical wave before reaching the Leeward Islands.
