International News: Mexico’s CFE restores power across Yucatán after 7-hour blackout

By Zoila Palma:  Power was restored across parts of southeastern Mexico around 3am today following a major blackout that left more than 10 million people without electricity for approximately 7 hours, with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) attributing the outage to alleged vandalism.

The blackout began Monday evening after two high-voltage power lines were reportedly damaged, affecting communities across Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche and Chiapas.

Mérida, Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Chetumal were among the areas affected, with businesses in Mérida facing disruptions to electronic payments, refrigeration and air-conditioning during the outage.

In a statement issued early this morning, CFE said electricity service had been fully restored to affected customers. The utility reported that specialized personnel identified damaged insulation strings on one of the transmission structures and carried out several hours of repair and restoration work.

The blackout also partially affected Belize and comes as Belize and southeastern Mexico continue to face electricity supply challenges linked to extreme heat, limited generation capacity and infrastructure constraints.
