By Zoila Palma: Explosions were reported in southern Iran near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state media. The island of Qeshm and the cities of Sirik and Minab were reportedly affected, Yahoo reports.
State news agency IRNA, citing official sources, said the cause and exact circumstances of the explosions were not immediately clear. The reports come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over military activity in and around the vital waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz has become a major flashpoint, with Iran largely restricting maritime traffic and threatening or attacking vessels.
The United States has also recently attacked several Iranian oil tankers in the strait or nearby waters, saying the strikes were in response to attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on U.S. warships.
