DJ Zinhle Opens Up About Life After AKA’s Passing: “I Was Not Prepared To Raise A Grieving Child.” DJ Zinhle has offered one of her most heartfelt reflections yet on life after the passing of Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, revealing how grief reshaped not only her life but also the dynamics of both families as they rallied around their daughter, Kairo.

Speaking during an interview with L-Tido, the award-winning DJ and entrepreneur described the loss as something that caught everyone off guard and admitted that one of her biggest challenges was helping a grieving child navigate such a heartbreaking moment.

“Oh… bad. It was bad. Very bad. I don’t even know how to explain it. It was just so unexpected,” she said.

Zinhle explained that while grief is universal, she never imagined having to raise a child through such profound loss.

“I don’t think I was prepared to raise a grieving child,” she shared.

By the time AKA passed away in February 2023, Zinhle said she had already moved forward with her life and was building a family with her husband, Bongani ‘Murdah Bongz’ Mohosana. She also reflected on the mutual respect that existed between Mohosana and AKA, saying it ultimately made an incredibly difficult situation easier to navigate.

According to Zinhle, the family’s focus shifted entirely to making sure Kairo remained surrounded by love and stability.

“I think, more than anything, all of us have adjusted the way we live just to make sure that Kairo is okay,” she explained.

She said everyone, including herself, Mohosana, AKA’s mother Lynn Forbes, and her own mother, has worked together to build a strong support system for Kairo.

Rather than creating division after AKA’s passing, Zinhle said the relationship between the families became even stronger.

“We’ve always been a blended family, and we love each other very much. If anything, our bond became even stronger because we had to come together and make things work for Kairo.”

The DJ also addressed criticism she has received over maintaining a close relationship with the Forbes family despite her marriage to Mohosana. She acknowledged that some people have questioned whether doing so is disrespectful to her husband or to the Mohosana family.

However, she insisted that every decision she makes is guided by one priority.

“Nothing I’m doing, and nothing any of us are doing, is about ourselves. Everything is about making sure that Kairo is okay.”

Zinhle said distancing Kairo from the Forbes family would ultimately make little sense, asking what purpose it would serve if it came at the expense of her daughter’s well-being.

She stressed that she is not seeking approval for her choices but hopes people understand that every decision is centred on creating a healthy and loving environment for Kairo.

Closing her remarks, Zinhle said peace has become the foundation of how she approaches both family relationships and life itself.

“I will always make decisions from a place of peace,” she said. “Peace is always at the centre of them, and so is my child.”

Her candid reflections offered a rare glimpse into how both the Forbes and Mohosana families have continued to prioritise Kairo while navigating life after one of South Africa’s most devastating celebrity losses.
