Benque House of Culture celebrates 25 years with “25 trees for 25 years” initiative

By Zoila Palma:  The Benque House of Culture is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special environmental initiative aimed at connecting cultural heritage with sustainability.

The “25 Trees for 25 Years” commemoration will take place on Monday, September 7, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Benque House of Culture in Benque Viejo del Carmen. The House of Culture officially opened in September 2001 and has since served as a center for culture, history and community activities.

The anniversary initiative is being held under the theme “Rooted in Culture – Growing for the Future,” with organizers planning to plant 25 trees as part of the celebration.

The initiative also supports the Greening Belize Initiative, promoting environmental awareness and sustainability while marking a major milestone in the history of the cultural institution.

The Benque House of Culture, located on St. Joseph Street, was established in what was formerly the town’s police station. It has become an important cultural space in western Belize, hosting exhibitions, educational programs, artistic activities and community events.

Over the past 25 years, the Benque House of Culture has played a role in preserving and promoting the history and traditions of Benque Viejo and surrounding communities.

The upcoming commemoration will bring together community members and stakeholders to celebrate the House of Culture’s contribution while looking toward the future.
