By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man has been spared jail but ordered to pay a $1,500 fine after pleading guilty to wounding his common-law wife during a domestic dispute on Central American Boulevard. He showed up to court on Friday with two “batty eye” local slang for both his eye being swollen from an apparent beating.

Thirty-four-year-old construction worker Alton Nicholson appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to wounding his 51-year-old common-law wife.

The charge arose from an incident on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

According to the police account, the woman was on Central American Boulevard at around 11:45 a.m. when Nicholson approached her while she was with a friend and asked for $10. She reportedly gave him a $20 bill, expecting him to return with her change.

When he did not return, the woman went looking for him. She told police that when she found Nicholson, he accused her of having a sexual relationship with one of his friends and threatened to hurt both of them.

Nicholson allegedly began dragging her toward an abandoned house. She managed to break free and run, but Nicholson chased after her and she fell, sustaining injuries.

Police arrived and later escorted the woman to the hospital, where a doctor classified her injuries as wounding.

Nicholson was also observed with swelling around both eyes and reportedly told police that he had been beaten by another man during the incident.

At his arraignment, Nicholson admitted to the offence and asked the court for leniency, telling the magistrate that he is the sole provider for his family.

As a first-time offender, Nicholson was spared an immediate prison sentence and fined $1,500 plus $5 cost of court. He has until December 31, 2026, to pay the fine or face six months in prison in default.
