A Final Word on My Memoir ‘Village Life’

By Musa Bassadi Jawara Author, “From Village Life in The Gambia to Global Views in Washington, D.C., And Beyond”

I read a piece circulating my name on social media, along with editors of Daily Observer.

In it, my name was repeatedly mentioned, apparently angered by my memoir. He appointed himself reviewer and critic, without being asked. If the author of the piece truly understood the letter and spirit of the Nobel Prize he claims to glamorize — a prize founded on intellect, inspiration, and the elevation of humanity — the concomitant rage, tirade and vindictiveness should have been avoided. His rage and anger communicated a singular drive: to ensure that neither this book nor its author derives any benefit from its publication and sale; a bitterness, a jealousy and a vindictiveness not common in our society, literally especially from someone who claimed college education, Harvard of all places. Plus all the fabricated expired weed smoking stories, a pathological liar can only point to a troubled and unstable man!

It seems this self-proclaimed Harvard graduate, this self-declared preeminent academic mind in the world, yet struggles to find stable footing in the real world. The real world has a way of seeing through pretense, self-promotion and counterfeit.

To keep using social media vomiting vulgarity, rage, anger and venom, repeatedly calling people names, is inhumane. That behavior belongs to the animal kingdom, not to the community of civilized discourse.

My book “From Village Life in The Gambia to Global Views in Washington, D.C., And Beyond” chronicles the odyssey of my life. It was written to give thanks and credit to my Maker, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, and to my parents who raised me in the village with dignity, discipline and faith. It is a serene, unharmed literary account — a testimony of gratitude.

For a tabula rasa, a sadist who chases contacts in Banjul to furnish him fabricated dirt, to launch a campaign to badmouth, cajole and unleash a public smear to discredit a life story documented in such peace — what and why it should be so vehemently fought in this tirade is beyond comprehension and stoops below the dignity of mankind.

If a self-proclaimed, so-called Ivy League education cannot reform a man and bring him into the community of reasonable and decent people, honestly I do not know what can. His condition can only be described as worrisome.

Several close associates of him have called and relayed a consistent pattern of rage and anger from this man. We sincerely advise that he seeks help, finds a job and earns an honest living.

I have written my story. I leave judgement to Allah and to decent readers.

This matter, as far as I am concerned, is now closed. I will not dignify with further response someone whose mental faculties appear not to be fully intact and stable.
