Wilmer Rivera, accused of cutting ex’s throat, attempted murder trial set for April 2027

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 34-year-old construction worker accused of attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend in 2023 is scheduled to stand trial in the High Court next April.

Wilmer Javier Rivera appeared before Justice Candace Nanton, where his trial on charges of attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm upon his ex-girlfriend was set for April 6-9, 2027.

Rivera was represented by attorney Ronell Gonzalez, who requested additional time to prepare for the second part of the case management conference and indicated that he was still awaiting instructions from his client. Gonzalez also told the court that discussions were ongoing with the Crown.

The prosecution indicated that it is ready to proceed to trial and that its witness is prepared to testify.

Justice Nanton granted the adjournment and scheduled a further case management conference for December 1, 2026.

The charges stem from a May 19, 2023 attack near Linda Vista Street in the Mile 2½ area of the George Price Highway in Belize City.

Reports said the woman was waiting for a taxi when she was allegedly attacked by Rivera, her former boyfriend. Police said at the time that the woman suffered stab wounds and was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment. Channel 5 reported that she was stabbed in the abdomen and cut across the throat.

Police also confirmed in 2023 that she had previously made a report involving Rivera which had been dealt with by the Domestic Violence Unit.

Rivera, then 31, was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on May 23, 2023 on one count of attempted murder and one count of use of deadly means of harm. He was initially remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

The allegations against Rivera remain unproven unless and until he is convicted in court.
