Why Politics Already Shapes Your Life More Than You Think

D.L. Hughley warns voters to fact-check claims before voting, exposing divisive tactics and misinformation in Michigan's heated political race.

Why Politics Already Shapes Your Life More Than You Think

On the eve of Election Day, D.L. Hughley used his “GED Section” segment on The D.L. Hughley Show to deliver a blunt message to voters: politics already shapes your life, whether you show up or not.

Trump’s Broken Promises

Hughley opened with an old marketing study: people with a good experience tell four others, while people with a bad one tell ten. With half of Trump’s term complete, he argued, voters now have a “real sample size.” The president was elected to lower grocery prices, cut gas prices, release the Epstein files, and end endless wars. According to Hughley, none of those promises have been kept.

The Culture of Blame and Political Platitudes

Turning to Texas, Hughley pointed to a flood of campaign ads about transgender surgeries in schools. He noted that Republicans have controlled the state for roughly 40 years. If those operations were truly happening, he said, the party in charge would be responsible. Instead, he argued, leaders “offer platitudes” and “someone to be angry at” rather than solutions.

Georgia’s Historic Opportunity

In Georgia, Hughley highlighted Keisha Lance Bottoms’ close race for governor. By his count, she needs Black voters to make up 32 percent of turnout to win. He put current participation at about 32.5 percent. If that number holds, the former Atlanta mayor would become the first Black woman elected governor in the United States.

Hughley pushed back on the idea of staying out of politics. Politics, he said, is the reason families can’t afford groceries or gas, why job prospects feel dimmer, and why people worry about AI and data centers. He noted that more eligible Americans skipped the last election than voted for either side. “Your silence got us this,” he said, adding that non-voters share responsibility for the outcome.

Hughley also took on voters who plan to “hold their nose” in Texas. He called Ken Paxton “a real live criminal, a real live fraud.” He questioned why some voters see a hard choice between Paxton and Talarico, a candidate many describe as a “brother in Christ.”

The Establishment Doesn’t Want Change

Hughley argued that both MAGA Republicans and establishment Democrats are uneasy with candidates such as Angie Nixon in Florida, El-Sayed, Keisha Lance Bottoms, and Talarico. In his view, both parties prefer to keep things “manageable” over backing candidates who could shake up the system. Stronger turnout behind these candidates, he said, could deliver the change voters keep asking for.

Hughley closed with a simple test. If you like the direction of the country, do what you did last time. If you don’t, do something different. Staying home is a choice, too. In Hughley’s words, “One way or another, you are going to count.”
