By Zoila Palma: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has criticized the decision by Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) to proceed with the reported BZ$80 million acquisition of Speednet/SMART, saying the move lacks sufficient transparency and due diligence.
In a statement, the party said, “The acquisition of a strategic national asset using public resources should never proceed under a cloud of uncertainty,” adding that “Belizeans deserve to know whether this transaction represents value for money.” The UDP also argued that the Board ignored concerns raised by the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, and other stakeholders.
The UDP announced it will hold an urgent meeting with the NTUCB and called on the Public Utilities Commission to ensure a transparent review of the proposed acquisition. The party added it “will continue to hold the Government and all public officials accountable” over the transaction.
