By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City mother who admitted retaining and spending money mistakenly deposited into her bank account has avoided immediate imprisonment and was instead placed on two years’ probation.
Thirty-four-year-old Kamera Kathleen Belisle, of the Lake Independence area, pleaded guilty to dishonestly retaining a wrongful credit after BZ$47,935.45 belonging to the Belize Government Lottery was mistakenly transferred to her Belize Bank account in March 2024.
Justice Candace Nanton imposed the probation sentence on Wednesday after considering a report from the Community Rehabilitation Department, which had recommended a suspended sentence rather than imprisonment.
Belisle must report to the Community Rehabilitation Department, comply with all instructions from her assigned officer and participate in any programmes considered appropriate. The judge recommended that she undergo financial-literacy training and financial counselling.
The court warned that Belisle could be brought back for sentencing and face up to two years in prison if she commits another offence or breaches the conditions of her probation.
The money was intended for Lowe’s Supermarket in Ladyville, a sub-agent of the Belize Government Lottery, but was sent to Belisle’s account after an incorrect telephone number and bank-account information were provided to Nando’s Wholesale LLP, the lottery’s sales agent.
Investigators found that BZ$28,592.35 had already been removed through bank transfers, ATM withdrawals and point-of-sale purchases before the Financial Intelligence Unit froze the account. A remaining balance of approximately BZ$20,030.81 is expected to be returned to the complainant.
Belisle, who was represented by attorney Norman Rodriguez, told the court she was remorseful and described the incident as a life lesson.
“I am really sorry that this happened, and I do apologize,” she said.
