POLICE in Harare have arrested two women for allegedly running an employment scam on WhatsApp that duped more than 100 job seekers, while another man was picked up in connection with 34 armed robbery cases in the capital’s high-density suburbs.

Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrests in a statement.

“The ZRP arrested two suspects Clara Chiwashira (20) and Chipo Masuku (22) for committing fraud through social media platforms,” Nyathi said.

According to police, the suspects lured victims into a WhatsApp group called “Job Opportunities” and promised them jobs as till operators, house keepers and merchandisers.

“The applicants were promised employment… The employment offers did not materialise despite the various amounts paid to the suspects,” Nyathi added.

Police say each victim paid amounts ranging from US$100 upwards, with more than 100 people defrauded in total.

Investigations are reportedly ongoing to track down other suspects identified as Boss Kevy and Charles Chizimbe.

In a separate incident, police arrested Melusi Delile (35) for a string of armed robberies in Budiriro, Glenview, Glen Norah and Highfields.

“The suspect targeted people walking through secluded footpaths, bus stops and dark areas to take cellphones, cash and other valuables,” Nyathi said.

He added that Delile is facing 34 counts of armed robbery. Police believe he had four to five accomplices who are still on the run.

Police urged members of the public with information on “Boss Kevy” or Charles Chizimbe and Delile’s accomplices to contact the nearest police station.
