Beverly “BJ” Rouse has always believed that the most unforgettable stories begin with authentic human experiences. As a writer, director and producer, she has dedicated her creative work to exploring memory, identity, resilience and the relationships that shape who we become.
Meet filmmaker Beverly “BJ” Rouse. Every project reflects her commitment to creating emotionally compelling films that invite audiences to pause, reflect and connect. That commitment is bringing well-deserved attention to her latest short film, First Fruit, which has earned an Official Selection at the 2026 LA Shorts International Film Festival, one of the world’s premier Academy Award-qualifying festivals. The selection places her among an accomplished group of filmmakers whose work will be showcased for audiences that include industry executives, distributors, producers, programmers and film lovers from across the globe.
For Beverly, the recognition represents another meaningful moment in a career centered on storytelling that prioritizes emotional truth, human connection and the quiet complexity of lived experience. At the center of First Fruit is a story grounded in subtle transformation. Starring Darrin Dewitt Henson, known for Soul Food, The Family Business and Stomp the Yard, alongside Vijay Beasley, the film follows a guarded man whose unexpected bond with a neighbor slowly reshapes the way he understands grief, healing and the possibility of opening himself back up to life. First Fruit leans into intimacy and explores how everyday interactions can become turning points, and how compassion often arrives in the most ordinary spaces. The film invites audiences into a reflective emotional journey where silence, conversation and shared presence carry as much weight as action.

Behind the camera, Beverly assembled a thoughtful creative team to bring her vision to life. The film features cinematography by Paul Morales, editing by Mike Viney, and an original score composed by Catherine Joy and Kevin Leysath II, whose music was developed in close collaboration with Beverly’s creative vision.
While First Fruit stands on its own as a cinematic work, its inspiration is a deeply personal moment that shaped her perspective as a filmmaker: the passing of a close friend named Andrea. Rather than focusing on loss alone, Beverly was moved by the ways connection, memory and kindness continue to live on through others. Although inspired by real experience, First Fruit is not autobiographical. Instead, it reflects Beverly’s larger creative interest in how people process grief, navigate relationships and find meaning in the small moments that often go unnoticed. The film explores caregiving, friendship, resilience and the quiet emotional work of learning how to keep moving forward.
Beverly’s approach to storytelling is centered on creating space for reflection. Her films do not dictate emotion but instead allow audiences to discover it for themselves through character driven narratives that feel grounded, honest and relatable. This approach has become a defining part of her voice as a filmmaker.
Beyond her work on screen, Beverly’s perspective is also shaped by lived experience. A breast cancer survivor, she brings a deep understanding of perseverance and perspective to her creative process. That experience informs her sensitivity to themes of healing and transformation, both of which are present throughout First Fruit.
As First Fruit prepares for its festival run, anticipation continues to build around its upcoming screening at LA Shorts. On Sunday, August 2nd, 2026 at 1:00 PM First Fruit will showcase at the Laemmle NOHO theater venue located at 5240 Lankershim Blvd in North Hollywood, CA. The festival, runs July 30 through August 12.
For audiences, the film offers an opportunity to experience storytelling that values emotional honesty and human connection above all else. For Beverly, it marks another step forward in a creative journey focused on telling stories that stay with viewers long after they leave the theater.
