The Devil Made Me Do It: Jehovah’s Witness busted wearing tourist’s clothes after stealing his suitcase from bus

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 36-year-old self-described Jehovah’s Witness was remanded to the Belize Central Prison after admitting that he stole a French tourist’s suitcase, wore some of the stolen clothing and sold other items because he wanted money to buy food.

Collin Burton Ramclam pleaded guilty to theft after admitting that he took the suitcase when he found it unattended on a bus travelling from Belmopan to Belize City.

The suitcase belonged to 20-year-old French national Ange Cesar Cirnevin, who reported it stolen on Friday, July 24.

Ramclam was later taken to the police station while wearing the tourist’s green polo shirt, a white, black and red scarf around his head and a silver Festina wristwatch valued at $300. Police also recovered the tourist’s grey suitcase and a bag containing clothing.

Ramclam reportedly told police, “I am sorry. I just meh wah money to buy food. I done sell the jeans pants and a wristwatch.”

Most of the property was recovered, except for one wristwatch and two pairs of jeans valued at $60.

In mitigation, Ramclam told the court that his own phone had been stolen the previous night, that he had been drinking and that he was hungry and had no money. He said a bus conductor had given him a free ride home from Belmopan after he travelled there to seek construction work.

Ramclam told the court that he fell asleep on the bus and noticed the suitcase when he awoke in Belize City. He admitted that he should have turned it over to the conductor but instead took it when he saw no one nearby.

The father of one asked the court for leniency, telling the magistrate that he attends Jehovah’s Witness services every Wednesday and Sunday and promising that the offence would not happen again.

Ramclam also admitted that he was not a first-time offender and had previously been convicted of theft in the Belmopan area. The senior magistrate remanded him while considering an appropriate sentence.
