Tanzania calls on SADC to prioritise regional projects that use limited resources efficiently

DURBAN: TANZANIA has called on member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to prioritise regional programmes and projects to ensure efficient use of limited resources and accelerate the attainment of the bloc’s development goals.

The call was made by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Said Shaib Mussa, who led the Tanzanian delegation to the SADC Standing Committee of Senior Officials meeting held in Durban, South Africa, on August 6–7.

The meeting forms part of preparations for the 46th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled to take place in Durban on August 17.

The committee is deliberating on a range of strategic issues aimed at deepening regional integration and advancing socio-economic development across the SADC region.

Key agenda items include the financial status and contributions of member states, the SADC annual regional development report, preparations for a special publication honouring the late Brigadier General Hashim Mbita, food and nutrition security, gender issues, as well as the implications of the evolving global political landscape on SADC member states.

Addressing the meeting, Ambassador Mussa underscored the need for member states to focus on high-impact projects capable of delivering tangible results within a short period, while also laying a strong foundation for the successful implementation of future regional initiatives, particularly in infrastructure development.

He cautioned that spreading limited financial and technical resources across too many projects could undermine efficiency and weaken the expected development outcomes.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary also stressed the importance of accelerating industrialisation, reducing dependence on imports from outside the region and strengthening regional value chains.

According to him, these measures are essential for boosting intra-SADC trade, enhancing economic resilience and driving sustainable growth among member states.
