Dr Samia launches Presidential Commission of Inquiry into violations of law during the 2025 General Elections

DAR ES SALAAM: President Samia Suluhu Hassan has launched the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Violence and Violations of the Law During and After the October 2025 General Election, tasking it with investigating the causes of the incidents, identifying those responsible and uncovering individuals who facilitated the unrest.

Speaking during the launch of the commission at the State House in Dar es Salaam yesterday, President Samia said the body had been established under the powers vested in her by the Commissions of Inquiry Act, Chapter 32, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the violence and alleged breaches of the law.

The commission will be chaired by Justice Shabani Ally Lila and comprises six commissioners, including judges from Uganda and Namibia, whose participation is intended to broaden perspectives and strengthen the credibility of the inquiry.

“In this commission, we have decided to involve colleagues from outside Tanzania in order to benefit from broader perspectives,” President Samia said.

She said the commission would investigate the individuals who incited the violence, those directly involved and those who financed the disturbances that occurred during and after the October 29, 2025 General Elections.

President Samia noted that the commission had been provided with clear terms of reference to guide its work and would submit its findings and recommendations in accordance with the law.

“I am confident that these judges will use their professional expertise, experience and oath of office to discharge their responsibilities with competence, diligence and integrity,” she said.

The President said the commission had been given five months to complete its work and submit its report, although the period could be extended if necessary.

She also called on all Tanzanians to cooperate fully with the commission to enable it to carry out its mandate effectively and without interference.

“I urge all Tanzanians to provide the cooperation required by the commission. Let us support it so that it can perform its duties without unnecessary interference,” President Samia said.
