MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Nineteen pirates escaped from a convoy of vehicles transporting them to Puntland’s regional capital on Saturday, a day after being captured in a raid to free the SIBU tanker off Somalia’s northeastern coast, Caasimada Online news website reported on Saturday.
The pirates broke free in the Shakaal area near Jariiban as regional security forces moved them by road from the coastal town of Gara’ad toward Garowe, the reports said. One of the men was killed attempting to flee and another was wounded. The remainder got away.
The size of the group initially captured remains unclear. Puntland authorities said 46 pirates were taken in the operation to free the SIBU1 tanker. Media reports have put the figure at 21.
Two of the men who escaped on Saturday had been captured separately following the earlier release of the Lutuf cargo ship, which was carrying weapons for a Turkish military base in Mogadishu. That vessel was freed after a ransom was paid.
Puntland authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
