Senator Wade defends vote on MCC compact bills

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Senator Louis Wade Jr. has publicly defended his vote in favour of the legislation tied to Belize’s Millennium Challenge Corporation compact.

In a social media post, Wade said the United States is providing US$125 million to Belize in exchange for several legislative commitments.

Those include raising the school leaving age from 14 to 16, introducing national assessment so student performance can be tracked, and restructuring vocational and technical schools to create a standardised qualification for people who study trades.

On the electricity side, Wade said the compact would fund a cable connecting San Pedro, which generates the most expensive electricity in the country, to the cheaper mainland supply.

“In MY OPINION no one needed to pay us to do what is in OUR BEST INTEREST,” he wrote. “So you would really vote against all that?”

Wade said he voted yes alongside all PUP and all UDP senators, while his fellow independent senators chose to abstain.

He added that he and other church leaders negotiated commitments to changes in the Education and TVET bills.
