SAPS launches probe after K9 Sky’s injury at training facility

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane has opened an investigation into the injury to a SAPS K9 at one of the service’s training and veterinary facilities.

The exact extent of K9 Sky’s injuries is not clear at this stage; however, Sky is currently receiving veterinary care.

The Acting National Commissioner has directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including Sky’s accommodation, supervision, care and compliance with applicable procedures and standards.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says, “Sky is no longer an operational K9 and had a history of escaping from the kennels at her previous K9 base in Limpopo. A decision was therefore taken to accommodate her at the veterinary facility while arrangements were being made for her placement with a suitable new owner. The donation process was still underway when the incident occurred.”
