SAFA NEC approves Pitso Mosimane’s appointment as new Bafana coach

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Pitso Mosimane, is set to take over as the new Bafana Bafana coach. This after the South African Football Association’s National Executive Committee approved his appointment at its Extraordinary Meeting at SAFA House on Saturday.

This means, pending final negotiations between SAFA and Mosimane, the former Al Ahly mentor is well positioned to be the man to replace Huge Broos, whose five-year contract recently came to an end after leading the senior men’s national team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup that took place in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

A statement posted on the SAFA website has quoted the association’s president, Danny Jordaan as saying, “The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week.”

The upcoming SAFA Elective Congress, set to take place next month, as well as the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, in which Banyana Banyana are currently participating, were some of the issues discussed at SAFA’s Extraordinary Meeting.

Incumbent Jordaan will face off against and his challenger, Amazulu owner Sandile Zungu, for SAFA’s top job.

A new NEC will also be elected to direct the association’s strategy.

A list of candidates was handed over to SAFA’s Governance Committee earlier this week.

Pre-congress screening and eligibility checks are currently taking place before the candidates are revealed in less than two weeks.

Governance Committee Deputy Chairperson Tumi Dlamini described the handover of the list of candidates as a sign of transparency to the football community in South Africa.
