Rwanda bans 52 Alcohol drinks from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Burundi

Rwanda has temporarily suspended the importation, distribution and sale of 52 alcoholic beverage brands originating from Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, India and Poland, ordering an immediate nationwide recall as part of a public health regulatory action.

In a recent public announcement issued the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) instructed importers to immediately recall all affected products, distributors and retailers to stop sales with immediate effect, and consumers to discontinue consumption of the listed beverages.

The regulator said the suspension was taken “in the interest of public health”, adding that additional products could be added as ongoing enforcement continues.

However, it did not specify the exact safety or compliance concerns affecting the listed products.

At least 13 alcoholic products from Tanzania have been affected and these include, Konyagi, Strong Dry Gin, Diamond Rock, Lemon and Ginger, Kiwingu Spirit, K-Vant, Blackhat, Campfire Gin, Cuca Vodka, Diamond Rock Gin, Hanson’s Vodka, Relax Vodka, Portable Spirit and X5 Gin.

From Uganda, 11 products have been banned and these include Bond 7 Whisky, Campfire Gin, Club 5 Gin, Tembo Liqueur, X5 Gin, Jonney’s Gin, X5 Liqueur, Pan Master Whisky, X5 Whisky, Gilbeys’ Flavored Gin and V&A.

From Kenya, the outlawed drinks are Kenya King, Gilbeys Gin, Avalon Premium Vodka, Safari Gin and Sweet Berry Vodka.

One Burundian product, Karibu Gin, has been banned in Rwanda.

Regional Trade Implications

The decision affects manufacturers across the East African Community, particularly producers in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Burundi that export alcoholic beverages into Rwanda.

The suspension comes at a time when regional trade under the East African Community is expanding, highlighting the growing role of national regulatory agencies in enforcing food and beverage standards across borders.

But the doomed products not only come from East Africa but also from India and Poland.

From India, 21 Products have been banned in Rwanda and these are, Dyno Premium Whisky, Yello Designer Whisky, Zoya Premium Gin, Zoya Premium Watermelon Gin, Kabana Coconut Rum and Kabana Café Rum.

Others are Black General Premium Whisky, Bazooka Strong Whisky, Red Bazooka Blended Deluxe Whisky, Royal Bazooka Café Rhum, Royal Bazooka Premium Deluxe Whisky Brewery and Distillery.

There is also Zoya Premium Gin, Buzzfuel Vodka Energy Mix, Rangeela Contemporary Indian Vodka, Greybolt, Saba Saba Whisky, Magic Moments Chocolate Vodka, Boner Blue Gin and Boss Whisky.    

 Also, Exo Vodka Energy Mix from Poland has been taken off the shelves in Rwanda.

Rwanda FDA has directed that:

• Importation of all listed products is suspended immediately.
• Importers must initiate a full product recall.
• Distributors and retailers must stop selling the products immediately.
• All remaining stock must be returned to importers.
• Importers must submit recall reports within three working days.
• Consumers should stop consuming the listed products immediately.
• All advertisements and promotional materials for the affected products must be removed.

Failure to comply will attract enforcement action under Rwanda’s regulatory laws.

The regulator also noted that additional products may be announced in future as investigations and enforcement activities continue.

Rwanda FDA has not yet disclosed the specific laboratory findings, quality concerns or regulatory violations that prompted the suspension. Further announcements are expected as the review continues.
