More than a thousand people packed New Direction Christian Church in Hickory Hill on Friday, July 17 as three Democratic members of Congress brought attention to a state congressional race reshaped by the redistricting that divided Memphis into three congressional districts. U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania joined state Rep. Justin Pearson on stage, rallying support for his congressional bid. They framed the race as a test of Memphis’ political voice after redistricting split the city’s roughly 400,000 Black residents among three congressional districts, none of which has a Democratic majority.
