By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Three hurricanes are active in the Pacific at the same time for the first time in 11 years.
Lowell is the strongest of the group, a Category 4 south of Hawaii after briefly reaching Category 5. The islands are under an emergency declaration for dangerous surf and heavy rain.
Karina and Marie are weaker and farther from land.
Reports point to a strong El Niño helping fuel the unusually active Pacific season.
For Belize, the relevant basin remains the Atlantic, where the hurricane season runs through November 30 and September is historically the peak month.
The Atlantic has produced Dolly and Edouard so far, both of which stayed well away from Belize. The National Meteorological Service reported no tropical cyclone formation expected over our region during the next 48 hours as of Saturday morning.
Residents are reminded that a quiet stretch means nothing in September. The most damaging storms in Belizean history arrived in this window.
