By Zoila Palma: U.S. forces struck three Iranian oil tankers today after Iran launched ballistic missiles toward two U.S. Navy vessels, according to the U.S. military. The attacks reportedly caused no injuries among American personnel.
U.S. Central Command said an American aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer evaded multiple attacks launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. In response, U.S. forces targeted three vessels, saying two crude oil carriers were permanently disabled.
The vessels identified were the M/T Downy, struck off the coast of Kharg Island, and the M/T Stark 1, targeted near Jask, NBC reports.
CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said the U.S. response was intended to impose an economic cost on Iran while defending American forces. He warned that the United States would continue to defend its personnel and could target Iran’s exposed oil fleet if necessary.
The strikes further raise tensions around Kharg Island, a strategically important hub for Iran’s oil exports in the Persian Gulf.
