One detained, another sought after 18-year-old Ewart Hernandez shot dead on Vernon Street

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have detained one man and are searching for another in connection with the murder of 18-year-old Ewart Hernandez in Belize City.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, while police officers were patrolling the area. The officers reportedly heard a gunshot and responded to Vernon Street, where they found Hernandez suffering from a gunshot wound.

Hernandez was rushed for medical treatment but later succumbed to his injury.

Police said surveillance footage showed Hernandez travelling along Vernon Street and stopping near its intersection with Partridge Street, where he remained seated on his motorcycle. Several minutes later, two men approached him, and one reportedly pulled out a firearm and fired a single shot, striking Hernandez.

A man matching the description of one of the suspects was apprehended shortly afterwards and remains in police custody. Investigators are searching for the second suspect.

Authorities said footage from police surveillance cameras across Belize City assisted investigators in identifying the suspects and directing subsequent police operations. Police confirmed that the detained suspect is known to law enforcement, while Hernandez was not known to police.

The shooting was initially reported near the St. Martin de Porres Swift Hall on Vernon Street. Police have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the murder though some reports allege he was robbed for a chain.
