On 5 August, 2023, a large-scale violent altercation took place at the Montgomery, Alabama Riverfront when a group of white boaters refused to move their pontoon boat that was blocking the docking space of the city-owned riverboat Harriot II.
Damien Picket, a Black co-captain made an attempt to clear the space so that the riverboat, carrying 227 passengers, could dock. Subsequently, Pickett was attacked by the white boaters and a fight quickly escalated. Multiple videos capture the event from differing angles, rapidly spreading across social media.
Black bystanders ran and, one person famously, swam in defence of Pickett, ultimately turning the incident into a large-scale brawl set with clear racial undertones.
As contemporary history, this event resonates far beyond a fight. Montgomery is not a neutral backdrop to this event; it is a city where enslaved people were trafficked along the Alabama River; the Montgomery Bus Boycott took place here, igniting the modern civil rights movement; and the riverfront itself sits on land once used for slave auctions and transport. When Pickett was attacked by white boaters, the historical symbolism was immediate and powerful; arguably offering partial explanation as to why the brawl escalated so greatly.
A crucial aspect of the event’s modern historical significance is the presence of collective Black defence. One of the most discussed aspects of the brawl was the rapid communal defence of Damien Pickett. This defence was interpreted as a refusal to allow racial violence to remain unchecked and mirrors historical patterns of Black mutual aid, self-defence and solidarity.
The event became viral and social media didn’t just document the event, it shaped its meaning. Memes became a part of the cultural record and public narrative formed collaboratively, making the brawl a case study in how digital culture produces historical memory.
Within days, the brawl had become larger than life – mythologised. The folding chair became a symbol of improvised resistance, the swimmer became a folk hero and the event was deemed as a reversal of historical racial power dynamics.
The swift legal response, with charges filed against several white participants, became significant in representing changing racial dynamics in the South. In this sense, the event became a measure of Montgomery’s evolving relationship with its own past.
The Montgomery Riverfront Brawl stands as a vivid example of how the past lives on in the spaces we inhabit, the conflicts we witness and the stories we tell.
