Museveni  clears NMG to resume Uganda operations

Nation Media Group (NMG) will resume operations in Uganda following authorisation by President Yoweri Museveni, its majority shareholder, Taifa Group, has announced.

The development marks a significant step for media operations in Uganda and is expected to strengthen regional investment and East African integration.

Through its subsidiary, Taarifa Limited, Taifa Group holds a majority stake in NMG and says it remains committed to responsible investment, corporate governance and sustainable development across the region.

In a statement, Taifa Group chairman Rostam Azizi expressed appreciation to Museveni for authorising the resumption of operations, describing the decision as a positive outcome of constructive engagement.

Azizi also acknowledged the role of the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in supporting the process that led to the breakthrough.

“We are honoured by this decision and remain steadfast in our commitment to Uganda’s socio-economic development through responsible investment, long-term partnerships and sustainable value creation,” Azizi said.

He added that Taifa Group supports NMG’s editorial mission, noting the importance of professional and independent journalism in promoting public discourse, good governance and national development.

“This decision demonstrates the value of dialogue, mutual respect and regional cooperation. Taifa Group will continue investing in opportunities that create jobs, strengthen institutions and advance shared prosperity across East Africa,” he said.

NMG chairman Joe Muganda said the media house will prioritise rebuilding its presence in Uganda and reconnecting with its audiences and stakeholders.

“We welcome the opportunity to resume operations in Uganda and to reconnect with our audiences, employees, commercial partners and communities,” Muganda said.

“Our immediate priority will be to restore our platforms responsibly, strengthen local content and provide Ugandans with credible, relevant and innovative journalism across print, broadcast and digital channels.”

He added that the group will leverage its regional footprint to support a resilient media industry while creating opportunities for talent and enterprise.

NMG operates across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, and its return is expected to reinforce regional media collaboration and cross-border investment.

The move underscores ongoing efforts by governments and private sector players in East Africa to promote economic cooperation, strengthen institutions and deepen regional integration.
