Local Black-Owned Businesses MakingNational Impact

Some of the most influential businesses in America begin locally.
A neighborhood beauty company, clothing line, restaurant, media company or creative studio can grow from a few customers into a brand recognized across the country.

The numbers demonstrate the importance of Black entrepreneurship. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that Black or African American-owned employer businesses generated approximately $249 billion in receipts based on its latest business-owner data covering 2023. It also counted approximately 201,000
Black-owned employer firms. (Census.gov)

The broader small-business environment is significant as well. The Small Business Administration reported in 2026 that the United States had more than 36 million small businesses, employing 62.3 million people. (SBA Advocacy)
Events such as the 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture also give Black-owned businesses opportunities to reach larger audiences. The festival’s WeLoveUs Marketplace brought Black-owned fashion, beauty, wellness, home and lifestyle brands together under one roof. (Essence)

Social media has made the path from local to national even more accessible.
A business can build a following through TikTok, Instagram or YouTube before ever opening a storefront in another city. But national recognition should not be the only definition of success. A Black-owned business that employs people from its community, provides a valuable service and stays profitable is already making an impact.

Every purchase can help.
Every recommendation can help.
Every share can help.

The next major Black-owned brand might not be in a national store yet.
It might be right around the corner.
