Kataka deny SC Villa top spot in Bukedea

Result: Kataka 1-1 SC Villa

SC Villa missed the chance to move to the top of the Uganda Premier League after being held to a 1-1 draw by Kataka at Bukedea Comprehensive Complex on Wednesday.

The Jogoos needed victory to climb to the summit, but Ali Sentamu’s second-half header and Najib Yiga’s penalty ensured the points were shared in a closely contested encounter.

SC Villa came into the match knowing that victory would have taken them to the top of the league table, but Kataka proved stubborn opposition as the two sides shared the spoils.

Villa head coach Zeljko Kovacevic handed Hassan Matovu his debut in goal, while Gilbert Ogenrwot started at left-back.

The visitors tested the Kataka defence with several aerial deliveries, but the home goalkeeper stood firm and dealt with the challenges that came his way.

Kataka came close to taking the lead when Ali Sentamu connected with Latif Ssenkubuge’s delivery from the right wing, but his effort narrowly missed the target.

Six minutes after the restart, Sentamu broke the deadlock, rising highest to power a header into the net and put Kataka ahead.

SC Villa responded as they searched for an equaliser, and their pressure eventually paid off when a Kataka defender handled the ball inside the area, prompting the referee to point to the spot.

Najib Yiga stepped up and calmly converted from 12 yards to restore parity. Neither side could find a winning goal as the points were shared in Bukedea.

The draw leaves SC Villa second on the table with 11 points, while Kataka remain 17th with two points.
