International News: Flávio Bolsonaro nominated to challenge Lula in Brazil’s 2026 Presidential Election

By Zoila Palma:  Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has been formally nominated as the presidential candidate of his father’s Liberal Party, setting up a potential showdown with incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s October election.

Speaking at the party convention in São Paulo today, Flávio paid tribute to his father, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence over a plot to overturn his defeat in the 2022 election.

“Bolsonaro’s blood flows here,” he said, as he presented his candidacy and accused Lula and Brazil’s Supreme Court of targeting his family.

Flávio has received support from Argentine President Javier Milei and a message of backing from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while also seeking endorsements from allies of US President Donald Trump.

However, his campaign has faced early challenges, including criticism over an alleged request for financial support from a jailed banker to fund a film about his father and backlash over his efforts to seek US support after Washington imposed higher tariffs on Brazilian exports.
