A workshop fire rarely respects neat categories. A damaged cable can ignite nearby packaging; a welding spark can find solvent vapour; and a small incident can reach fuel, aerosols or LPG before staff have time to react. For an owner-manager, that makes garage fire safety a business-continuity issue as well as a compliance requirement. The question is not simply which extinguisher to buy, but which combination fits the hazards, layout and people on site.

What are the five main types of fire extinguisher?

UK extinguishers are red with a colour-coded panel. Water, with a red panel, is for Class A materials such as paper, wood and textiles; it must not be used on live electrical equipment or flammable liquids. Foam, identified by cream, covers many Class A and B risks, including some flammable-liquid fires, but suitability around energised equipment depends on the product marking and the risk assessment.

Blue-panel powder is often described as versatile. Standard ABC powder can tackle Class A, B and C fires, while specialist powders are required for Class D combustible metals. It can also knock down a fire involving electrical equipment, but the powder obscures vision, can be inhaled and may damage machinery, so it is not a universal answer for an occupied indoor workshop. Businesses comparing dry powder extinguishers for workplaces should check the stated ratings rather than assume every powder unit covers every risk.

Black-panel carbon dioxide extinguishers suit Class B liquids and fires involving electrical equipment, with no residue left on tools or electronics, although they offer limited cooling and re-ignition remains possible. Yellow-panel wet chemical units are designed mainly for Class F cooking oils and fats, so they are more likely to belong in a staff kitchen than on the workshop floor. Government guidance says the provision must be suitable for the fires that can reasonably be expected, not selected by habit.

Why mixed risks demand a combination

Garages sit where several common workplace fire causes overlap: ageing wiring, chargers and power tools; petrol, paint and solvents; oily rags and packaging; pressurised cylinders; and hot work such as welding or cutting. Electric and hybrid vehicles add high-voltage systems and lithium-ion batteries, which require specific procedures and competent advice. One extinguisher positioned by the exit may therefore leave a serious gap elsewhere.

A foam unit may make sense for ordinary combustibles and many fuel or paint risks, with CO2 nearby for electrical equipment. Powder may be appropriate for some outdoor or well-ventilated areas, gas risks or specific operations, but its discharge can reduce visibility and contaminate precision equipment. Class D work needs the correct specialist powder, while vehicle battery incidents demand a separate emergency plan. The right answer comes from a competent fire-risk assessment, not a generic shopping list.

Make fire safety part of operations

Extinguishers are the last line of defence. Owners should first reduce ignition and fuel sources: store flammables correctly, remove waste and oily rags, control hot work, protect cylinders and keep escape routes clear. Electrical equipment must be maintained to prevent danger, but fixed annual PAT testing is not automatically required by law. Inspection and testing intervals should reflect the equipment, its use, the workshop environment and previous findings.

The person responsible for fire safety must assess the premises, review the assessment regularly, maintain appropriate measures and provide staff with information and training. Although the precise legislation differs across the UK, those legal duties cannot be delegated away by buying equipment. Extinguishers need clear positioning, routine checks and competent servicing, and employees should know that evacuation and calling the fire and rescue service take priority over firefighting.

The difference between a near-miss and months of disruption is often preparation: hazards controlled, equipment matched to the risk and people confident about when to leave.
