Foreign nationals’ road trip ends with R1m dagga haul

Morgenzon – Two foreign nationals have been arrested after police seized about 180kg of dagga worth an estimated R1 million during a crime-combating operation in Morgenzon, Mpumalanga.

The suspects, aged 30 and 40, were arrested on Thursday, 10 September 2026, at about 8.30am along the R39 Road.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), members of the Morgenzon police and Secunda Flying Squad were conducting an operation in the area when they spotted a white Volkswagen Golf with Mpumalanga registration plates.

“They stopped and searched the vehicle and found 21 bags containing dagga,” SAPS said in a statement.

Both suspects were arrested after the discovery. Police said the dagga weighed approximately 180kg and had an estimated street value of R1 million.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are foreign nationals,” police said.

SAPS said it was working with the Department of Home Affairs to establish the suspects’ immigration status.

“Police are working collaboratively with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain the status of the suspects in the country,” the statement said.

The seized dagga has been confiscated as investigations continue.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court, where they will face charges of dealing in dagga.

Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise commended the officers involved in the operation.

Modise thanked the members “for their teamwork” and warned criminals that police would continue targeting criminal activity in the province.

“In Mpumalanga, police will not rest until it is a crime-free province,” Modise said.
