Addis Ababa, September 23, 2026 (FMC) — There is something revealing about a man who walks into another person’s house, points at the carpet and begins explaining where it should be laid.

The carpet, after all, is not his.

That is the strange picture evoked by Egypt’s latest rhetoric toward Ethiopia: a distant beneficiary of waters flowing from the Ethiopian highlands speaking as though it possesses the measuring tape, the floor plan and the keys to the house.

Egyptian Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam recently said Ethiopian politicians “need to be educated,” arguing that building a dam on an international river is not like “laying a carpet” in one’s home.

But Ethiopia does not need a lesson in where to lay its carpet. It needs the freedom to build its house.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is Ethiopia’s answer to a very Ethiopian question: how does a country blessed with immense water resources but long starved of electricity turn the force of its rivers into light, industry and opportunity?

The answer is the GERD.

And here lies the part that Cairo’s rhetoric repeatedly seems unwilling to digest: the turbine takes the energy; it does not take the river. The water passes through the turbines and continues downstream.

So what exactly is being “taken”?

Ethiopia is not putting a cork in the Abbay. It is putting turbines in its path.

Yet whenever Ethiopia builds, Cairo reaches for the language of prohibition. Whenever Ethiopia develops, the old vocabulary of entitlement returns. And whenever Ethiopia insists on sovereign rights, the response comes wrapped in warnings, lectures and reminders that Ethiopia should somehow know its place.

But whose place?

A river may cross a border. A nation does not cross its own sovereignty merely because its waters continue beyond its frontiers.

Ethiopia has never claimed the right to tell Egypt how to manage its own territory, economy or resources. It does not demand a seat in Egypt’s kitchen before Cairo cooks its food, nor does it presume to rearrange the furniture in Egypt’s house.

Why, then, should Ethiopia be expected to hand over the keys to its own?

The answer lies not in confrontation but in equality.

The modern Nile Basin cannot be built on the arithmetic of old privileges, where one country’s security becomes another country’s ceiling. It must be built on equitable and reasonable use, mutual respect and the recognition that development is not a crime committed upstream.

Ethiopia’s need for electricity is real. Its right to develop is real. Its sovereignty is real.

And the Abbay is not a carpet.

It is a river. Ethiopia is a sovereign nation. Neither is Cairo’s to roll out at will.
