Community activist and sports administrator, Trevor Cranston, is the new man in charge of the Grays Green United Incorporated Development Society.

Cranston, who previously held the position for just three months back in 2019, was elected from among four candidates, on Wednesday night, to lead the body for the next two years.

He said the campaign was a tough one because of the narrative that surrounded a particular candidate.

“There was a talk around that history would have been created in the Gray’s Green community, in that if Miss Taryn Nicholas would have been elected, she would have been the first woman to actually be elected president of the Gray’s Green United Incorporated. So it was not easy at all. I had to do a lot of campaigning and make sure that victory would have been mine,” he said.

Cranston received a total of 73 votes during Wednesday night’s vote, nine more than Taryn Nicholas. Alvin Jones (13 votes) and John Willock (1 vote), also contested the presidency race.

The new head says it is now time to focus on the work at hand.

“The bathroom in the building now is unsanitary, especially the main bathroom, so I’m going to ensure that the main bathroom is operational and we have cleaners monitoring the bathroom. Another thing that I will be doing, is I’m going to be targeting the supervisor or the manager of the National Solid Waste Department and we’re going to do a cleanup – a massive and comprehensive cleanup of the Keithley Shepherd Recreational Park. So those are things that I’ll be doing within a month. Another thing I want to do is the amendment to the constitution and then shortly after that, a facelift of the entire building,” Cranston said.

The other members of the new executive are Trevor “Ranks” Underwood (Vice President), Joanne Willock (Secretary), Jahkema Benjamin (Treasurer), Julian “Mucho” Roberts (Floor Member), Alvin Jones (Floor Member) and St Clair Knowles (Floor Member).

Incumbent, Jason “Mud Man” Shaw, did not contest the elections.

The Gray’s Green United Incorporated Development Society shares the responsibility of managing sporting and social facilities within the community, which included the Keithly Sheppard Recreational Park and Gray’s Green basketball court.
