Cawich to Galvez: you have no chance at my seat

Mayor Pablo Cawich says he does not believe his challenger can unseat him, setting a confident tone as the capital’s mayoral contest takes shape ahead of the March 2027 municipal elections.

With both major political parties beginning to hit the campaign trail, the Belmopan mayoral race will pit the People’s United Party’s Cawich, the incumbent, against the United Democratic Party’s Richie Galvez.

Galvez brings municipal experience to the contest, having served as a councilor under former Mayor Khalid Belisle, though he is still seen, according to local reporting, as something of a political newcomer, known mostly for his work as an event coordinator.

Asked by local media for his thoughts on Galvez as his mayoral opponent, Cawich was blunt: he does not believe Galvez has a chance at becoming the next Mayor of Belmopan. The Mayor went on to say that he believes his council has done enough to warrant being reelected by the people of Belmopan, planting his campaign flag firmly on his administration’s record.

Galvez has not responded to the Mayor’s comments in the report, and the UDP challenger will have ample opportunity to make his own case as the campaign season unfolds.

The early sparring in the capital reflects a national picture already in motion, with party conventions and candidate selections taking shape across the country’s municipalities ahead of March 2027. Belmopan, as the seat of government, always carries symbolic weight beyond its size, and both parties will contest it accordingly.

Between now and election day, the voters of Belmopan will weigh the incumbent’s record against the challenger’s pitch, and history offers its own quiet caution to confident frontrunners everywhere: the only poll that counts is the one in March.
