Belize gets soaked next: up to 4 inches of rain on the way

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize’s stretch of gentle weather has ended. An approaching tropical wave has prompted the National Meteorological Service to issue an Excessive Rainfall Watch, with 2 to 4 inches of rain possible over the country during the next 24 to 48 hours, especially over the south, alongside a Small Craft Caution as seas turn rough.

According to the National Meteorological Service, the tropical wave will support wet and unstable weather. Skies will be cloudy today with a few sunny breaks, remaining cloudy tonight, with outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms developing over most areas, and more so over the south and central areas.

The Excessive Rainfall Watch is the day’s most important item. Rainfall of up to 2 to 4 inches is possible, with the south facing the greatest amounts, and residents are advised to monitor the weather situation and stay tuned for any flooding updates from the National Hydrological Service or NEMO. Southern communities still recovering from July’s floods should take particular note, as saturated ground and swollen creeks need far less rain to cause trouble the second time.

At sea, a Small Craft Caution is also in effect, warning of gusty winds and locally rough seas near heavy showers and thunderstorms. Winds will blow from the east to north at 10 to 20 knots, with moderate to rough seas and waves of 4 to 7 feet. Operators of small crafts should exercise caution, and postponing non-essential trips is the wiser play.

The cloud cover eases the heat. Temperatures along the coast will reach a high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit (31 Celsius) and a low of 82 (28 Celsius). Inland areas will reach 92 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius) and drop to 74 (23 Celsius). In the hills, expect a high of 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius) and a low of 68 (20 Celsius).

Critically, the reassurance holds: tropical cyclone formation is not expected in the region over the next 48 hours. This is a rain event, not a developing storm.

Looking ahead to Wednesday and Wednesday night, outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms continue to develop over most areas during the day, then gradually decrease at night.

Today’s high tides are at 8:24 AM and 9:50 PM, with a low tide at 3:48 PM and another low at 2:50 AM tomorrow. The sun rose at 5:34 AM and will set at 6:20 PM. The forecast was issued by forecaster Catherine Cumberbatch.
