By Zoila Palma: The Belize City Council officially launched the 2026 September Celebrations this morning with its annual Flag Raising Ceremony, ushering in a month of activities celebrating Belize’s rich heritage, culture, history and 45 years of independence.
The ceremony brought together city leaders, young people, community organizations and members of the public as the national flag was raised in a display of patriotism and national pride.
Youth Shadow Mayor Caitlin Aragon delivered the welcome address, while Youth Shadow Deputy Mayor Tayshaun Ireland gave the closing remarks.
Delivering the keynote address, Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller reminded Belizeans that nation-building is not limited to those holding public office. “You do not need to hold public office, lead a national organization or perform some extraordinary act to contribute meaningfully to your country,” Miller said, emphasizing that Belize is strengthened through the everyday choices and actions of its citizens.
The ceremony also recognized the contributions of the Scout Association of Belize, Girl Guides Association of Belize, Pastor Ruth Pipersburgh and members of the Child Advisory Body Belize City.
The Council also welcomed Members of the House of Representatives, Henry Charles Usher and Francis Fonseca, while expressing appreciation to the Belize City councillors and City Administrator for their continued service and leadership.
This year’s celebrations commemorate 45 years of Belizean independence under the national theme, “Look at Me. I am Belize @45.”
The Belize City Council is encouraging residents and visitors to join in activities throughout September as the country celebrates its identity, resilience, unity and independence.
