Another Nestor double-double goes in vain as UNT lose

Star Saint Lucian basketballer Megan Nestor had another strong outing on January 28, but the University of North Texas women’s team were unable to come back from a big second-half deficit, losing to the University of Texas San Antonio 66-64 on the road.

Nestor, a 6-4 forward from the fishing village of Canaries, and a former national netballer, recorded her 12th double-double of the season, with 11 points and 14 rebounds to go with three assists, two blocks, and a steal at the Convocation Center. Mekhia Chase had a career-high 20 points, and Andi Schissler added 12.

Chase was pivotal, as the Mean Green nearly matched the largest comeback in programme history, as they were down 20 late in the third quarter, before a furious rally over the game’s final 10 minutes pulled it back into the finish. The comeback effort was powered by 36 fourth-quarter points, UNT’s highest total in a quarter since the season opener.

Thirteen of Chase’s 20 came in the fourth quarter. She shot a remarkable 7-of-9 from the field. She also set new career highs in both three-pointers made [4] and steals [3]. “We just finished the first nine [conference games] at 5-4,” head coach Jason Burton said. “We’ve got to figure out how to get to a 7-2, 8-1, 9-0 type run on the back end of this, and it starts with Florida Atlantic this weekend.”

North Texas beat FAU 81-56 in the American Conference opener back on December 30.
