Burkina Faso has announced direct revenues of 2.5 trillion CFA francs, about 3.8 billion euros, from its mining sector between 2022 and 2025.
Energy, Mines and Quarries Minister Yacouba Zabré Gouba, presenting the sector’s record, said the results came from a government policy aimed at strengthening national control over mineral resources and increasing the state’s share of their benefits.
Gold: 94 tonnes in 2025 and a leap in state purchases
Burkina Faso’s total gold output reached 94 tonnes in 2025, including production from industrial mines and the artisanal mining sector.
Gold collected by the national precious materials company rose sharply, from 457 kilograms in 2022 to around 40 tonnes in 2025 — roughly an 87-fold increase in three years.
The jump followed a series of government measures, most notably a reform of the mining code in 2024 and the creation of the Burkinabè mining holding company SOPAMIB, intended to strengthen the state’s presence in mining projects and tighten control over the production and marketing of minerals.
Through these reforms, the authorities are seeking to raise public revenues, curb the leakage of gold outside official channels, and bolster national sovereignty over one of the country’s most important economic resources.
Electricity: from 501 to more than 812 megawatts
In the energy sector, Burkina Faso’s installed electricity capacity rose from 501 megawatts in 2022 to more than 812 megawatts in October 2026.
Access to electricity in rural areas has also nearly doubled, climbing from about 6% to roughly 12%.
The government has set a target of raising installed capacity to 2,500 megawatts by 2030, aiming to meet growing demand for electricity and support industrial and productive projects.
Quarries: from exporting raw materials to processing them at home
In the quarry sector, the record shows 40 sites in production, while the authorities work to shift from exporting raw materials to processing them locally into finished products.
The government is betting on local manufacturing to increase the added value of natural resources, create new jobs, and reduce the economy’s dependence on exporting minerals and raw materials in their primary form.
The results reflect Burkina Faso’s drive to reorganize its mining and energy sectors and make them twin pillars for financing development and strengthening the country’s economic independence.
