ZIMBABWE was on Sunday crowned Rugby Africa Sevens champions after the national team defeated hosts Uganda 26-19 in a thrilling final at Kyadondo Rugby Ground in Kampala.
The Cheetahs had to come from behind after Uganda raced into a 12-0 lead early in the contest which had all eyes on it.
Zimbabwe then produced a strong second-half comeback, with Tatenda Kamubvumbi helping them level the scores before the Cheetahs took the lead.
Uganda fought back to make it 19-19, but Zimbabwe had the final say when Tavonga Ablant crossed the line in the dying moments to seal a dramatic 26-19 victory.
The triumph also secured Zimbabwe promotion to World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series for the 2027 season, giving the Cheetahs a return to the international Sevens circuit.
Zimbabwe finished the tournament unbeaten as Sunday’s win came at the back of a 24-19 win over Zambia in a semi final match.
Cheetahs’ Rugby Africa Cup triumph saw them lifting the trophy for the fourth time in history, having previously won it in 2000, 2012 and 2018.
