UMass Dartmouth Football Player Killed In Providence Stabbing 

A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football player was killed and a teammate wounded early Saturday after a stabbing in Providence, Rhode Island, police said.

Freshman running back Marvins Antoine, 18, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with stab wounds to the chest but died from his injuries. His teammate, 19-year-old freshman defensive back Kensley Macean, was hospitalized with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries to his head, neck and left arm, ABC 7 News reports.

The players had gone to the Mezzo Lounge in Providence Friday night with other teammates, just hours after UMass Dartmouth lost a home game to Framingham State. Police told the news station that a fight broke out at the nightclub around midnight before moving across the street to a Wendy’s parking lot, where Antoine and Macean were stabbed.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said another UMass Dartmouth student, 19-year-old Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze, was arrested on campus and is expected to face a murder charge in Rhode Island. Eze is not a member of the football team.

Perez said investigators believe the initial altercation involved a female and some of the victims waiting in line at the nightclub. He said there is currently no indication that Eze and the victims knew one another.

Police used Flock cameras in the area to identify the vehicle Eze allegedly used to leave the scene, helping investigators locate him on the UMass Dartmouth campus.

The university community is mourning Antoine, who graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Former teammate Orlando Delgado described Antoine as a role model and peacemaker who dreamed of playing in the NFL.

“He was super loyal. He was an example setter. He was just always a good person to be around,” Delgado told WBZ-TV.
