Uganda signs off Para-Badminton International 2026 with memorable home performance

The curtains came down on the Uganda Para Badminton International 2026 on Sunday in Kampala at the Lugogo Indoor stadium, bringing to a close six days of inspiring competition that showcased the growth of Para Badminton across Africa.

While Nigeria emerged as one of the tournament’s dominant forces, the hosts ensured the final applause belonged to Uganda with a series of outstanding performances across the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.

Uganda’s athletes demonstrated remarkable depth, collecting medals in virtually every category and proving that the country continues to establish itself as a rising force in continental para badminton.

Leading the home celebrations was Brian Mugabe, who captured the Men’s WH1 title, defeating Nigeria’s Onwukwe S. Ekeoma to claim Uganda’s gold medal in the wheelchair men’s competition. Mugabe’s tournament also featured another podium finish after partnering Rwanda’s Jean D’Amour Ndahiro to win the WH1-WH2 Doubles title in an impressive cross-border partnership.

Elizabeth Mwesigwa struck gold in the Women’s SL3category, finishing ahead of compatriot Resty Nangobi Kalembe, who secured silver, while Juliet Mary Namunoga completed an all-Ugandan podium with bronze. It was one of the tournament’s standout moments as Uganda swept every medal in the classification.

Uganda also celebrated another singles champion through Harriet Nakayima, who won gold in the Women’s SL4 event. The hosts continued their consistency in the women’s competitions with Sumin Mutesi earning silver in the SU5 class, while Ritah Asiimwe claimed bronze. In the wheelchair events, Sarah Nazziwa collected silver in WH1, Brenda Nabukenya finished with silver in WH2, while Flavia Basuuta and Pamela Banura each secured bronze medals.

Hassan Mubiru reached the final of the SL4 class to win silver, while teammates Latifu Ngobi and Julius Obura both earned bronze medals. Jonathan Ochan added another silver medal in the SU5 category, while Godfrey Katalo and David Mukisa shared bronze honours in the SL3 event.

Uganda’s strength was perhaps most evident in the doubles competition, where the home side featured prominently on the podium.

The pairing of Hassan Mubiru and Resty Nangobi Kalembe claimed the SL3-SU5 Mixed Doubles title after an all-Ugandan final against Julius Obura and Harriet Nakayima, guaranteeing the hosts both gold and silver. Another Ugandan partnership of David Mukisa and Sumin Mutesi also reached the podium with a bronze medal.

In the SL3-SU5 Men’s Doubles, Uganda secured both bronze medals through the partnerships of Godfrey Katalo and Latifu Ngobi, and Hassan Mubiru and Julius Obura, while Sarah Nazziwa teamed up with Rwanda’s Jean D’Amour Ndahiro to win bronze in the WH1-WH2 Mixed Doubles.

Although Nigeria claimed several gold medals across the tournament—including the men’s SL3, SL4, SU5 and WH2 events, the women’s wheelchair classes and multiple doubles categories—Uganda consistently challenged for honours, with home players reaching finals and medal positions across nearly every classification.

By the time the final shuttle landed on Sunday, Uganda had delivered a performance that reflected both quality and growing depth. From home champions to all-Ugandan finals and podium sweeps, the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International ended as a celebration of resilience, talent and the continued rise of para badminton in the country.

Uganda’s medal haul across the championships underlined the success of the hosts, with gold medals from Brian Mugabe, Elizabeth Mwesigwa, Harriet Nakayima, the Brian Mugabe/Jean D’Amour Ndahiro doubles partnership, and Hassan Mubiru/Resty Nangobi Kalembe in mixed doubles, complemented by an impressive collection of silver and bronze medals that kept the national flag flying throughout the tournament.
